Procon Group Inc. carries out renovations, alterations and facility upgrades inside hospitals and healthcare buildings across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area and Southern Ontario. We have worked as a general contractor and construction manager since 2008, on healthcare projects generally ranging from approximately $25,000 to $3 million.
Healthcare construction is defined less by what is built than by the conditions it is built under. The building does not close. Clinical services continue on the other side of the hoarding.
Construction generates dust, debris and airborne contaminants that a healthcare facility cannot tolerate. Our work is carried out under the infection-control requirements set by the facility and the construction documents for each project.
Depending on what the project calls for, that can mean hard hoarding, sealed containment, negative-air and filtration arrangements, controlled entry and exit, dedicated waste routes, daily housekeeping and protection of adjacent finished areas. Requirements are confirmed with facility representatives before work starts rather than assumed.
Access to healthcare space is rarely continuous. Rooms become available and then do not. Procedures take priority over schedules.
We plan for that: phased work, room-by-room sequencing, off-hours scheduling for noisy or disruptive activity, and the flexibility to shift resources to another area when access changes. Emergency and operational routes stay open throughout, and patient privacy is treated as a site condition rather than a courtesy.
Healthcare projects involve more parties than most — facility operations, clinical staff, consultants, equipment installers and trades. Coordinating them is as much the work as the construction itself.
We manage that coordination, keep the site safe and controlled while occupied areas remain in use, and close out with deficiency review, documentation and a clean handover of the space.
